Advanced Search

The Advanced Search option, which appears on the search bar towards the top of every page, enables you to specify more detailed search criteria than the Quick search facility.

When you select the Advanced Search hyperlink, you obtain the set of advanced search criteria below. Each of the advanced search criteria is described in the table beneath the picture. Click on the feature of the picture to go directly to the explanation of that feature in the table.

Using Advanced Search, you can search on any combination of the following criteria:

Option

Function

Title

If you want to search for an item of legislation by title, type that title, or any part of it, in this box.

For example, if you type the word commission, the search returns all legislation that contains the word 'commission' in the title.

There are various search strategies you can employ in this field. For instance, if you enter more than one key word, such as the words police and courts, your search will return all legislation with both of those words in the title, in any order. Alternatively, if you want to search for an exact phrase, you can enclose the phrase in quote marks. So, if you type "civil defence", the search returns all legislation with 'civil defence' in the title. You can also specify wildcards, an asterisk (*) representing any number of characters, and a question mark (?) representing a single character.

See Using the Title field for a full set of possible search strategies for this field.

Year (Enacted)

(or range of years)

If you want to search for legislation made or enacted in a particular year, type the four digits of that year in this box (ensuring that the radio button to the left of the box is selected first).

If you want to search across a range of years, select the ‘Range of Years’ radio button, and type the beginning year of the range in the ‘From’ box and the end year of the range in the ‘To’ box.

See Using the Year field for further details of this field.

Number

(and N.I. Series Number)

If you want to search for legislation by number, such as the chapter number of an Act, type that number in the ‘Number’ box.

If you want to search for Northern Ireland Orders in Council by the N.I. series number, type that number in the ‘N.I. Series Number’ box.

Note that you can type numbers in both these boxes if you want.

See Using the Number field for further details of this field.

Legislation Type

Choose an entry in this list box to restrict the search to a specific legislation type.

For instance, if you want to search through all primary legislation, select the All Primary entry, and if you want to search through all statutory instruments, select the Statutory Instruments (All UK) entry.

By default the All Legislation entry is selected, which means there are no restrictions on the legislation for the search.

See Types of Legislation on SLD for further details.

As at the Date

(or as enacted)

If you want to search for legislation as it was at a given date, specify that date using the three list boxes here.

By default the boxes are set to the current date.

For further information on the Start date and End date attributes assigned to legislation on SLD, see Attributes.

If, rather than selecting a specific date, you want to view legislation in the form in which it was enacted (or as it stood at the relevant basedate, if that was later), select the ‘or as enacted’ radio button. If you select this button, any date selection made will be ignored.

Text Search

If you want to search for legislation that contains specific words or phrases anywhere in their content, type that text in this box.

There are various search strategies you can employ in this field, and these strategies are just the same as for the Title box above. So, for example, a search of "foreign and commonwealth office" returns all legislation that contains the phrase 'Foreign and Commonwealth Office' somewhere in its content. You can also include an asterisk (*) wildcard in place of any number of characters, such as aboli* to search for 'abolition', 'abolish', 'abolishing' and so on, and a question mark (?) wildcard in place of a single character, such as licen?e to search for 'licence' and 'license'.

See Using the Text Search field for a full set of possible search strategies for this field.

Geographical Extent

If you want to search for legislation that applies to a given geographical extent, make your choice with these check boxes and radio buttons.

Notice that the UK check box covers England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, while the GB check box covers England, Wales and Scotland. There is a check box for England & Wales, and there are also individual check boxes for each country in the UK. You can select any of these in combination, so if you want to specify an extent of England and Scotland, check the England box and the Scotland box.

For further information on the Extent attributes assigned to legislation on SLD, see Attributes.

If you want the search to return versions of legislation that apply to any part of your chosen extent, select the ‘Applicable to’ radio button. If, on the other hand, you want the search only to return versions of legislation that match your chosen extent precisely, select the ‘Exact extent match only’ radio button.

NOTE: Caution should be exercised in using the ‘exact match only’ option because the search engine will look for versions of provisions that match your search at the relevant date. The extent of a version may be narrower than that of the provision as a whole (where, for example, there are concurrent versions for different extents). It is therefore generally advisable to use ‘applicable to’ to ensure that you find all versions of all provisions that apply to your chosen extent.

For example, selecting ‘UK’ and ‘Applicable to’ will return versions of legislation that apply to England or Wales or Scotland or Northern Ireland, or any combination of these. However, selecting ‘UK’ and ‘Exact extent match only’ will return only versions of legislation that apply to England and Wales and Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Having selected the search criteria that you want, choose whether to display search results in chronological or alphabetical order by selecting either the ‘Chronological (most recent first)’ radio button or the ‘Alphabetical’ radio button. Then click ‘Find’ to perform the search. Each time you perform a search in a session, the criteria are stored as a recent search so that you can run the same search again at a later date.
